Case Study - Beehive Floors
Beehive Floor Mesh
Peter McFadden Beekeeping based in Conway supplies Locker heavy duty galvanized mesh and Black Epoxy coated mesh to Beekeepers in the UK and worldwide for use in beehive floors.
Open mesh beehive floors are now in widespread use as an effective means of reducing the number of damaging varroa mites in the beehive.
Varroa mites are a serious pest worldwide, reducing the useful lifespan of the bees and making them prey to various viruses.
The mites have now become resistant
to commonly-used chemical treatments.
A hive of bees will collapse within a year if not treated. Newer treatments are less effective, but using them with open mesh floors gives good results.
Varroa mites fall from the bees, through the mesh floor and out onto the grass, whereas the old wooden floors allowed the mites to climb back onto the bees.
